Understanding the Dashboard and Host Overview
The host Overview page is the first thing SimpleVM shows you after you sign in, and it is the right place to start almost any administrative session. In a single screen it answers the questions you should ask before you touch anything: Am I on the host I mean to manage? Is it healthy and up to date? Is anything under unusual load? Is its identity, time, and security configuration what I expect? The dashboard is built to be read at a glance and then act as a launch point — once you have spotted what needs attention, you open the matching page from the left-navigation menu and do the detailed work there.
The dashboard is deliberately a summary, not a monitoring system or a diagnostic tool. It will not tell you why a virtual machine is slow or which process is consuming memory; it tells you that something is worth a closer look and points you toward the page where you can find out. Treat it as the operational starting point described throughout this chapter, and pair it with the deeper pages — Chapter 23, Monitoring Your SimpleVM Host, and Chapter 24, Performance Tuning and Optimization — when a reading calls for investigation.
Reading the dashboard does not change the host, so this chapter has no configuration to undo. If a reading here leads you to open another page and make a change, use the Revert this change guidance in that chapter.
The dashboard at a glance. The rest of this chapter walks the page panel by panel, then turns it into a daily routine:
- Find your bearings — confirm the host name and that the Overview page has loaded (Section 7.1).
- Check status — read Health and Usage for update state, recent logins, and CPU/memory load (Section 7.2).
- Confirm the machine — use System information to be sure of the physical host (Section 7.3).
- Decide where to look next — use the dashboard to choose the right page for CPU, memory, storage, or network follow-up (Section 7.4).
- Verify host settings — read Configuration for host name, time, domain, performance profile, and security (Section 7.5).
- Make it a routine — fold these checks into a short daily review, and troubleshoot the dashboard itself when it misbehaves (Section 7.6).
7.1 Host Overview Page
Overview
The Overview page summarizes the current SimpleVM host. Its header names the host and identifies it as running Thinware SimpleVM on Rocky Linux 10.1 — for example, tw-rnd1.thinware.lab running Thinware SimpleVM built on Rocky Linux 10.1 — and a Reboot control with a dropdown sits at the top right. Below the header, four panels lay out the host's state side by side, each with a link into the deeper page behind it.

Before you begin
- You are signed in to the SimpleVM management interface and the Overview page has loaded. See Chapter 6, Accessing the SimpleVM Management Interface.
- You know which SimpleVM host you intend to review — useful when several hosts have similar names or you have multiple browser tabs open.
- You have Administrative access available if a follow-up task will change the host. Reading the dashboard does not require elevation; making changes from the pages it links to does. See Section 6.5, Sign In with Administrative Access.
7.2 Health and Resource Usage
Overview
The Health and Usage panels are the fastest operational check on the host. Health reports whether the system is up to date and shows the last successful login, with a View login history link. Usage shows live CPU and memory use — for example, 7% of 64 CPUs and 35 / 62 GiB of memory — with a View metrics and history link into longer-term data.
Review host health
Use this short procedure when you first sign in, before starting maintenance, or when someone reports that a virtual machine is slow.
Before you begin
- You are signed in to the SimpleVM management interface.
- You know which SimpleVM host you intend to review.
- You have Administrative access if you will need to open update settings or other privileged pages.
Procedure
- From the left-navigation menu, select Overview.
- In the Health panel, confirm whether the host reports that it is up to date, or that updates are available. If updates are pending, plan them from Chapter 18, Software Updates, rather than applying them mid-task.
- Review the last successful login, including the time and source address. If the sign-in is unexpected, select View login history and review recent access before continuing.
- In the Usage panel, read current CPU and memory use.
- If CPU or memory looks unusually high, select View metrics and history to see whether the spike is momentary or sustained.
- If usage stays high, decide whether the cause is a VM workload, a host process, a storage or network issue, or a pending maintenance task — then continue in the matching page rather than acting from the dashboard.
Verification
- The host reports a healthy or expected status.
- CPU and memory use are within the normal range for the workload this host runs.
- The last-login information matches expected administrative activity.
- If a reading was abnormal, you have identified the next page to open — Virtual machines, Storage, Networking, Logs, or Terminal.
7.3 System Information
Overview
The System information panel identifies the physical (or virtual) server running SimpleVM. It is most useful when you need to be certain you are on the correct host — in environments with several SimpleVM hosts, clustered nodes, lab systems, or servers with similar names. The panel includes a View hardware details link for the full inventory.
The panel reports:
- Model — the server or hardware platform the system reports (for example, Dell Inc. PowerEdge T430).
- Asset tag — the asset identifier assigned to the server, when available.
- Machine ID — the unique system identifier the operating system uses.
- Up since — how long the host has been running since its last boot.
7.4 CPU, Memory, Storage, and Network Status
Overview
The Overview page gives a fast read on CPU and memory through the Usage panel, while the left-navigation menu leads to the deeper storage and networking pages. For routine work, use the dashboard to notice that something looks abnormal, then move into the related page for detail. Storage and network status live on their own pages rather than on the dashboard, so the dashboard's role here is to prompt the right next step.

What to do next
If the dashboard shows abnormal resource use, do not assume the host itself is the cause. Pressure can come from a busy VM, a backup job, a storage pool nearing capacity, a network-path problem, or a maintenance task. Narrow the cause from the related page — Chapter 12, Managing Storage Pools; Chapter 13, Managing Host Storage; Chapter 14, Managing Virtual Networks; or Chapter 15, Managing Host Networking — before changing host configuration. 7.5 Host Configuration Summary
Overview
The Configuration panel summarizes the host settings that affect identification, management, security, and performance. Review these values during first-use validation, before support work, and before production maintenance. Several fields include a link to the page where the setting is managed.

Accurate time matters for logs, certificates, authentication, updates, clustering, and troubleshooting; an incorrect clock can make unrelated problems look like certificate or authentication failures. | Domain | Whether host directory-domain integration is configured. On a standalone host this offers to Install realmd support. Whether the guide should keep this language general or expand it into a domain-join workflow is not yet decided. |
| Performance profile | The active system performance profile. On a SimpleVM host this is virtual-host, the profile tuned for running virtual machines. |
| Cryptographic policy | The active system-wide cryptographic policy (for example, Default). |
| Secure shell keys | The host's SSH key fingerprints, through a Show fingerprints link — useful for confirming host identity when you connect over SSH for command-line administration. |
Time and identity check: Before joining services, troubleshooting certificates, reviewing logs, or preparing a cluster, confirm that the host name and system time are correct. Incorrect time in particular can make authentication, certificate, update, or cluster problems appear where none exist.
7.6 Using the Dashboard for Daily Operations
Overview
The Overview page is meant to be your normal starting point for SimpleVM administration. It gives you enough to choose the next workflow without beginning in the terminal or paging through logs. A consistent short review at the start of a session catches the things most likely to matter — pending updates, an unexpected login, or unusual load — before they become incidents.
A suggested daily review
- Confirm you are on the intended host by reading the host name in the page header.
- Check Health for update status or warnings.
- Review the last successful login for expected administrative access.
- Read CPU and memory in Usage for unusual pressure.
- Glance at System information and Configuration when you are preparing for maintenance, support, or troubleshooting.
- Open a page from the left-navigation menu only after you have identified what needs attention.

Troubleshooting the dashboard
Use these checks when the Overview page does not show what you expect, or when a reading points to a possible host problem.
